VERDICT

A project that was very conditioned by the low budget has been skillfully dealt with, proposing a building vessel that is austere without being harsh and is a welcome addition in its surroundings. The passive architectural design provides both sun protection and privacy, and it is complemented by other active measures and by the appropriate choice of materials.

DESCRIPTION

The brief that included the pool, locker rooms and gym has been placed in a single level to avoid architectural barriers, inside a C-shaped building that surrounds a landscaped public space and makes the most of sunlight. Along with the extra insulation and the use of renewable energy, the building has been certified as class A in terms of energy efficiency.

INDOOR POOL IN A MUNICIPAL SPORT CENTRE. TORRE ROJA, VILADECANS, BARCELONA (ES)

AJUNTAMENT DE VILADECANS; URBASER SA, CONSTRUCCIONES DEPORTIVAS CONDAL SA, MANEL BRULLET I TENAS, ARCHITECT, MIQUEL PORTELL TARRÉS, ENGINEER

VERDICT

The relevant features are the quality of the natural lighting and the careful choice of materials.

DESCRIPTION

The pool has two adjacent shells: one for swimming and a recreational one. Different strategies have been used to reduce the environmental impact: passive strategies (control of sunlight, intermediate spaces for thermal control) and also active (covering the water with a thermal blanket during the night, hot water from solar energy, free cooling, ventilation according to the indoor air quality, routing the internal energy surplus towards deficit areas). The building has obtained a class A energy certificate.

VERDICT

The metal roof has received a careful attention, up to the point that it becomes the protagonist, protecting but not confining the pool.

DESCRIPTION

The pool of 382 m² is contained in a pavilion covered with a vault of metal structure, supported on arched trusses. Only two of the four walls of the perimeter are opaque, so the pool stays very open in contact with the outside.
